ONGOING VOLUNTEER PROGRAMS
RIVER KEEPERS
and TRAIL TENDERS are needed to adopt a reach of the Lackawanna River
and Heritage Trail. We need you,
your family, your co-workers and or business employees to
ADOPT a reach of the River in your neighborhood or
community. We have been working to develop a TRAIL along the entire 40
mile length of the Lackawanna River from Forest City, Carbondale, The
Mid Valley, Scranton, The Down Valley to Pittston.
We don't have the trail completed yet but we do have nearly 20 miles of Trail and River bank in Public Ownership. Each one of these sites needs someone to adopt and care for it. This can include something as simple as walking along a given reach of River / Trail once a week or so and picking up any litter you see. Get a few friends together on a Saturday in the spring and summer to cut grass and cut back weeds from a section of trail .
Work
with LRCA and adopt a planting bed or install and help maintain native
flowers and shrubs at a new planting area that you can help design and
manage. Then go on and enjoy your adopted Trail reach or River bank.
Have a picnic, go fishing or just pass the time of day watching the
river flow. CALL US NOW and we'll set you up with a nearby reach of the
Beautiful Lackawanna !
Are you
interested in monitoring water quality of the Lackawanna River and its
tributaries? Are you interested in a particular stretch of the
River or a tributary? Join our
River Watch program and become a volunteer water quality
monitor. We provide the equipment and you provide the time and
interest. Testing is generally conducted three times between
April and October and involves taking simple measurements of water
quality, collecting water samples for lab analysis and looking at the
macroinvertebrate community. This program was established in
1991 and is still running strong.

This Month On The River. Jazz Record Hop
We
have access to an interesting collection of Jazz recordings on 78 and 33
rpm records. The records date from the late 1930’s to the mid 1960’s
and include all of the great stars of American Jazz like: Benny Goodman,
Glenn Miller, Toots Thielman, Bix Biderbeck, Count Basie, Duke Ellington
and many more. We
will have a variety of beverages, snacks and hors d’oeuvres to tempt
your pallet. And bring your dancing shoes, because we’re going to cut
up the rug! Your donation will help cover the LRCA’s utility bills and
keep the Silkman House warm this winter. In the hot sultry days of summer you can walk or ride a bike along the Lackawanna on many official and unofficial trails. The LRCA hosts spontaneous activities such as interpretive hikes, bike rides and kayak runs.
