LRCA Performance Partners & Collaborators

LRCA routinely collaborates with an array of partners and acknowledges an enormous debt of gratitude here. The reclamation of the Lackawanna River and the protection of our watershed is a daunting and continuous challenge. No one agency could begin to tackle the many obstacles which lay in the path to success. Together, since 1987, the Lackawanna River Corridor Association, Association members, volunteers, board members, legislators and concerned citizens from all walks of life - we are making our river Better, Cleaner and Safer.

We want to cite our partners here and simply say thanks. They include but are not limited to: The Rail-Trail Council, Lackawanna Heritage Valley Authority, Lackawanna County, US Army Corps of Engineers, PA DEP/BAMR, The Lackawanna County Historical Society, The National Park Service and an array of public and private stakeholders both locally and regionally. Further, The Association provides volunteer opportunities for the Senior Environmental Council, a VAC affiliate and many others. LRCA is actively working with all municipalities in our watershed to identify and resolve issues relating to water quality, river access, acid mine drainage, CSO's, and wetlands and habitat preservation.

RiverFest Draws 2,000 to Party

A day of river revelry brought more than 2,000 people to the banks of the Lackawanna River on Saturday for RiverFest 2003.
This year began the fourth decade of the Lackawanna River Corridor Association's annual Canoe-A-Thon.
About 110 canoes and kayaks launched this year at two sites -- David Maslyar Park in Archbald for a 12-mile run and Mellow Park in Blakely for an eight-mile run. Both courses ended at Nay Aug Avenue in Green Ridge.
After a morning on the water, participants walked up the river's banks to a festival with music, hamburgers, hot dogs, hoagies and their vegetarian alternatives. The second-annual River Regatta drew a couple of boats and the sixth-annual Duck-A-Thon finished the day.
Bernie McGurl, co-founder of the association, estimates this year's Duck-A-Thon and racers brought in about $15,000 to keep the river clean.
Several racers noticed the association's continued efforts to clean up a river that was once known for its contamination.
Racer Paul McHale remembered when shopping carts and vacuum cleaners littered the water. His friend and fellow racer Jay Talarico said the water looked clean.
"It didn't taste too bad either," said Mr. Talarico, who took an unexpected dip in the river.
Dawn Karam, who finished third in the eight-mile women's division, serves on the association's board. She said the goal should be to lure more people onto the river and its banks.
"It was incredible to drive down the river in a canoe and see how beautiful the river and the area around it really is," said Ms. Karam. "We should have restaurants. We should have places on the river so we could enjoy it."
Bonnie Beers and her husband, Jack Burcher, have participated in canoe races stretching 30 miles. But she always worked as the pit crew for the Lackawanna River race.
Ms. Beers joined in this year, and the married couple raced each other for 12 miles down the Lackawanna River. They both won.
Ms. Beers and her teammate finished first in the 12-mile mixed division. Mr. Burcher and his teammate finished first in the 12-mile two-man division.
