Lackawanna River Canoe-a-thon Rules
1. Canoe-a-thon is a special event conducted by the Lackawanna River Corridor Association (LRCA), a private, not for profit, river conservation organization.
2. The primary goal of Canoe-a-thon is the safe enjoyment of the river by participants and spectators of the event.
3. Compliance with these rules and any requests or orders by event staff or emergency response officials is mandatory.
4. Failure to comply with these rules, requests or emergency orders will result in disqualification and removal from the event, disqualification from future LRCA events and potential criminal and/or civil prosecution.
5. No alcohol or drugs: The consumption of alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs is prohibited during Canoe-a-thon. Drug or alcohol use will disqualify participants from consideration in the athletic competition and from receiving T-shirts or other end of race consideration.
6. Intoxicated persons will be subject to arrest. Suspect behavior will be monitored by LRCA staff and the police.
7. Personal flotation vest (PFV) must be worn by all participants at all times when on the water.
8. Participants are responsible to render assistance to other canoeists in need of emergency aid or to notify emergency personnel or LRCA staff of an emergency.
9. All canoes must complete the course by 2:30 pm.
10. All canoeists must wear official race numbers so that
the number is visible on the front of both paddlers. Numbers are pinned on the PFV and removed by paddler and validated at canoe turn-in by LRCA staff and canoe livery crew prior to being redeemed for Canoe-a-thon T-shirts.
11. Canoeists are responsible to communicate their race number
and names to the finish line judge immediately on landing and disembarking at the finish line.
12. Canoeists are responsible to immediately move their canoe from the landing beach and insure that it is carried quickly up-slope and out of the way of later arrivals.
13. Canoeists renting a canoe through the LRCA are responsible for returning the canoe, paddles, and PFVs to the vendor in good condition at the canoe turn-in area
behind the Ice Box area off Olive Street in Scranton. LRCA reserves the right to assess monetary damages and collection costs for rental equipment not returned or returned in a damaged condition.
14. Canoeists using rental canoes and equipment need to verify that their rented equipment is returned in a satisfactory condition by returning the canoe, paddles, and PFVs to the canoe livery crew and having their race numbers validated with an LRCA stamp prior to turning in race numbers for Canoe-a-thon T-shirts.
15. Canoeists using their own canoes need to verify that their canoes and equipment are off the landing beach and processed through canoe turn-in area to have their numbers validated prior to redeeming them for T-shirts.
