Lackawanna River Water Mites
Order: Hydrachnidia
Key features:
> 4 pairs of legs
 small dark spots on body
 nearly microscopic

Water mite larvae are typically a parasite of aquatic insects. They are found crawling on rocks or buried in the gravel. They are pollution tolerant organisms, generally found in the River from Scranton downstream. Their small size makes them hard to find, however, they are common, especially in lower reaches of the River that has significant amounts of sediment deposited along its bottom.
