Pyrallid caterpillars are closely related to terrestrial butterflies and moths. The Pyralidae family is the only family within the Lepidoptera order that is aquatic. Like their terrestrial relatives, pyrallid caterpillars feed strictly on plant material. They shred leaves and bore into the stems of aquatic plants. Pyrallids are rare in the River, but have been found in slower, shallower water along the banks, usually in leaf packs.
