Caddisfly larvae can often be found on the undersides of stones protected by a collection of small pieces of stone, shells, or plant material which is held together by an adhesive substance that caddisfly larvae secrete. They may also be found in cases, which they make from small stones or plant material.

Caddisflies are common throughout all reaches of the Lackawanna River. Organisms of the Hydropsychidae family, Hydropsyche and Cheumatopsyche, are relatively pollution tolerant and often dominate the macroinvertebrate community throughout the River. The remaining pictured caddisflies are pollution sensitive and are generally found within upper reaches of the River, downstream through the Mid Valley.
