Most beetle larvae found in the River are nearly microscopic and have alternating brown and black
bands on their body. They are the larvae form of adult riffle beetles . The larvae are pollution intermediate organisms that are widespread throughout the River, except for the lower
stretch downstream of Old Forge. They generally feed on small particles of plant material.
