AMD from the Old Forge Borehole empties directly into the River along the west
bank within the Connells Patch section of Old Forge upstream from the Union St. bridge. A 60' concrete box culvert was constructed parallel to the River's bank in 1961
to convey rising mine water from the underground mine pool into the River. Along with the Duryea Outfall, the Old Forge Borehole drains the underground mine pool
between Blakely and Duryea. The Old Forge Borehole discharges the largest volume of mine water into the River, nearly doubling the River's flow during dry summer
months. Mine water from this discharge contains especially high concentrations of iron, which have completely covered the River's substrate with iron oxides from
the borehole, downstream to the River's confluence with the Susquehanna River. This has left the last three mile reach of the River nearly void of aquatic life.Only a
few pollution tolerant macroinvertebrates such as scuds, hydropsychid caddisflies, blackflies, midges, and aquatic worms have been found, and only a few minnows
and occasionally some fish swimming into the Lackawanna from the Susquehanna are observed within this stretch.
